The Secretariat should redouble its efforts to ensure that requests for interpretation services were met.

Programme delivery should be enhanced as a result of the improved quality of interpretation services.

The provision of interpretation services to regional and other major groupings was also important, and she noted with concern that 32 per cent of requests for interpretation services for such meetings had been denied over the reporting period.

In regard to paragraph 18 of the draft resolution, it is estimated that meeting servicing and interpretation to be provided for up to two panel discussions to be held with interpretation services in all six languages will cost 21,900, and common support services are estimated at 5,200.

It requested the Secretary General to review the current established practice concerning the provision of interpretation services for meetings of regional and other major groupings of Member States at Headquarters and other duty stations with a view to improving the provision of interpretation services to those meetings.

The resulting burden on the Secretariat, on conference servicing facilities and on translation, interpretation and editing services would be immense.

Headquarters and the United Nations Office at Geneva have been providing interpretation services for videoconferences on an ad hoc basis.

(a) Implementation of measures ensuring timely delivery of high quality interpretation, meetings and publishing services, in particular through optimum allocation of available resources, information sharing with other conference centres regarding interpretation workload, and training of staff in application of information technology in interpretation and publishing processes

Such practices prejudice fair process, as they can diminish access to legal assistance and interpretation services, and may exacerbate prior trauma.

10. The members of the Advisory Committee have shown great flexibility, understanding and cooperation as regards both interpretation and translation services.

Advanced planning was necessary in order to ensure the availability of conference services and interpretation in all official United Nations languages.
