12. The Committee had expressed concern about the issue of ensuring the safety and security of United Nations personnel and had called upon Member States to ratify the Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel so as to ensure its entry into force.

That continues to be an issue of high priority, because the safety of United Nations personnel is the primary factor in the success of the Organization's political and humanitarian operations.

The resolution on road safety and health also called upon Member States to prioritize road safety as a public health issue and to take steps to implement measures that are known to be effective in reducing road traffic injuries.

Safety is a vital aspect of the Department of Safety and Security mandate.

With respect to administrative questions, the priority attention given to the issue of the security and safety of United Nations system staff and associated personnel in the field was welcomed, and it was stated that Member States should take the necessary action to ensure the safety of United Nations staff, including early implementation of the Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel.

Malaysia wishes to reiterate that the United Nations should continue to play a major role in addressing this highly preventable but deadly public safety issue.
