The Inevitable Re Birth of European Integration

European integration is vital for Kosovo and for the region.

They stress that European integration banished the specter of war from the old continent. And European integration has, indeed, delivered the longest period of peace and prosperity that Europe has known for many centuries.

If the Commission so decided, the European Commission would consider replacing European Community with regional economic integration organization .

The experience of the European Investment Bank for promoting infrastructure and regional integration is also worth studying.

Indeed, none of the current initiatives to boost Latin American regional integration resemble at all the European integration process. Nor can they be considered the first tentative steps towards such a shared destiny, in the manner of the 1952 European Coal and Steel Community Treaty, which began the project for European unity.

In other words, it is not true that the European Union does not constitute a political union. European economic integration in all its aspects reflects the desire to integrate Europe politically, which, at least in my view, implies that European economic and monetary integration is irreversible.

The Republic of Moldova has irreversibly chosen the path of European integration as the strategic objective of its foreign policy.

To be sure, European economic integration a process that, one might say, culminated with the eurozone s establishment also brought clear political benefits. As Robert Schuman promised when he conceived the idea of a European Community, integration has prevented the recurrence of war between Germany and France.

Likewise, the European Council has agreed on a new Compact for growth and jobs that identifies a specific European dimension of growth policies, mainly integration of energy, transport, communications, and services, together with higher infrastructure investment.

There are many similar examples from the fields of standards, competition policy, and taxation that are applicable here. So, fundamental considerations speak for deeper European integration, extending even to the creation of a single European state.

The situation could become even more complicated, because some leaders in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia would like to join the hard core of European integration should some European states one day decide to create a two speed Europe. If these countries join the hard core of European integration, while others, Poland in particular, opt to stay out, it would create a dividing line between them, burying Visegrad cooperation.

The problem is that the European Commission and the European Parliament have consistently failed to generate a compelling narrative, leaving ordinary Europeans unconvinced of the EU s value. Making matters worse, national and European leaders have allowed even encouraged citizens to believe that integration is inevitable, lowering the stakes for European elections.

So why not with political integration? At any rate, comprehensive opt outs are better than long lasting blockades and disintegration of the European project.

For no one should be mistaken there are alternatives to European integration all of them bad, unwanted, and dangerous. Unless all Europeans remain devoted to integration and the creation of an open Europe, the Continent's dark past may once again become its future.

We remain convinced that European integration is the only way to find permanent solutions to existing problems and challenges in the area.
