The Department of Safety and Security stated that with regard to recommendations 2 and 3, it understood that the role of the Department was to provide safety and security related technical support and advice on the projects referred to in those recommendations.

Many requirements and recommendations in those publications may be applicable to the safety of nuclear power sources in outer space.

Space safety standards of radioisotope and reactor NPS should be based on the most recent IAEA source texts and on the recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, taking into account national standards and rules, such as the radiation safety standards (MRV 99) or the basic radiation safety sanitary rules (OSPORB 99) currently in force in the Russian Federation.

The Subcommittee noted the statement made by the representative of IAEA stating that the Principles should be reviewed in view of the most recent International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) recommendations on radiation safety incorporated into the IAEA International Basic Standards for Protection against Ionizing Radiation and for the Safety of Radiation Sources, published by IAEA as Safety Series No. 115.

Its radiation risk assessments provide the scientific foundation used by the International Commission on Radiological Protection in developing its recommendations for radiation protection and by the International Atomic Energy Agency in formulating its Basic Safety Standards for the protection of people and the safety of radiation sources.

The most recent ICRP recommendations on radiation safety are incorporated in the IAEA International Basic Standards for Protection against Ionizing Radiation and for the Safety of Radiation Sources, which have been approved by the International Labour Organization, FAO, WHO, IAEA, PAHO and the Nuclear Energy Agency of OECD.

Occupational Safety. The concept of occupational safety is still developing in Pakistan.

The authority has received the International Regulatory Review Team and Radiation Safety Infrastructure Appraisal international peer review missions, and has an aggressive action plan to address the recommendations of these missions.

Where such large explosive articles are as part of their operational safety and suitability tests subjected to test regimes that meet the intentions of these Recommendations and such tests have been successfully undertaken, the competent authority may approve such articles to be transported under these Recommendations.
