Under the Agreement of the European Economic Area (EEA), concluded by the European Union with most countries of the European Free Trade Area (EFTA), all practices liable to impinge on trade and competition among the EEA participants are subject to rules that are virtually identical to European Union competition law.

Economic and social conditions are deteriorating because Israel, the occupying Power, continues to violate international law and international humanitarian law.

Indeed there was a legal obligation on member States under European Treaty rules not to breach Community law.

The original European Economic Community, created by the Treaty of Rome in 1957, was, as the name indicates, economic in nature. The Treaty itself was hard headed, grounded in the converging economic interests of France and Germany, with the Benelux countries and Italy rounding out the basis of a new European economy.

My generation grew up with the image of Europe as an economic form of cooperation. Political motives behind European integration were overshadowed by the economic project.

What is surprising for a European at least for this European at the moment is the relative optimism in all these cities. Yes, the economic news has been and remains grim.
