The cheap credit ushered in by the euro fed an inflationary economic bubble in southern Europe that burst when the financial crisis hit. Credit terms worsened abruptly, and what was left was the thoroughly overpriced rump of economies that had become excessively dependent on foreign financing.

The size of France s political crisis seems to be out of proportion with the country s real situation. To be sure, France has been severely hit by the global financial crisis and economic downturn.

GENEVA Europe s slow motion sovereign debt crisis may appear unique, but it is not. Just a few decades ago, Europe had the Exchange Rate Mechanism, which collapsed during a crisis very much akin to the one afflicting Europe today.

BRASILIA Large emerging economies were hit hard in the past year particularly in the first half by the crisis in developed countries, with Europe in recession and the United States staging only a meager recovery. But 2012 will also be remembered as the year when structural changes in the Brazilian economy were consolidated.

Iceland, which was hit by a financial crisis in 2008, provides the counterfactual. Whereas Greece remains mired in depression, Iceland which is not in the eurozone has essentially recovered.

Emotions and expectations ran high when the new democracies from the former East Bloc joined the EU only five years ago. Europe is our number one priority stabilizing the eurozone and resolving its current crisis are essential to stability and economic recovery in France.

Countries that had adopted such reforms were, on average, less adversely affected. Those that had not, particularly middle income countries in Central Europe and the continent s periphery, tended to be hit the hardest.

The lesson of the migration crisis in the Mediterranean is clear Fortress Europe is not working. The EU must map out a new approach.

In the first scenario, a more united and homogeneous Europe emerges from the crisis, enforcing greater restrictions on member states budgets to reduce apparent risk. Accompanied by a strong, broad eurozone, risk of a future currency crisis remains.

In Europe, the pre crisis boom in real estate investment was fueled by reckless credit flows from Northern to Southern Europe. Credit rationing has followed, as banks reduced their overburdened balance sheets and were discouraged from risk taking.

A financial crisis, just as we have seen, could not be solved by America alone or Europe alone it needed the world to work together.

Obviously, the crisis will be economically and financial challenging for Eastern Europe. It will heighten the difficulty of meeting the convergence criteria for euro adoption.
