Portfolio equity flows in sub Saharan Africa were virtually non existent prior to 1990s but are slowly emerging e.g., increasing from 100 million in 1992 to 4.9 billion in 1995, and then declining to 2.1 billion in 1997.11 In North Africa, Morocco has begun to receive small, but growing, amounts of portfolio investment, mainly in response to its privatization programme which has also animated its stock exchange.
